A message from the Central West WIRES Branch:

Not all young magpies out of the nest and on the ground need our help, with "fledging" a natural part of magpie development.

Fledging is when a young bird leaves the nest before they can properly fly and helps them learn about food foraging and to develop the wing strength they need to take to the skies. Despite loud squawking most magpie babies are quite ok, with their parents flying back regularly to check on them, provide them with food and defend them if necessary.

If you find a young bird you think may be in danger, relocate it nearby out of harms way, but still close enough for its parents to find it so they can continue to care for it. If you find a young bird that is injured and needs veterinary assistance or rescue please ensure you know exactly where you found the bird so it can be returned to its own family group. If it is returned to another group's territory the magpie may be seen as an intruder and attacked and possible killed by the other group.

To contact WIRES in the event of a native animal emergency, please call 1300 094 737 or the local number for Orange on 02 6331 1066.
